FINDA WAS GÉL?

Update 27 Nov. 2020: 'Finda's Folk' may originally have referred to the 'yellow' race, but in most later texts the term rather seems to refer to people who share characteristics or morals and behavior (the racial component being less defining) with Finda as described in 'Finda was Yellow' [007/30].

Why Finda's people were not (only) our 'yellow' (Asian) race, but more likely (also) southeast-Mediterranean

The word GÉL (yellow) is used twice in the OLB (see below).

Variety in some modern and old languages:

geel - dutch
gelb - german
giallo - italian
giel - frisian
gult - icelandic
gul - danish, swedish, norwegian
yellow - english

gelo - oldsaxon, oldgerman
geolu, geolo - oldenglish
g(h)elu(w) - olddutch
gulr - oldnorse
helvus - latin

OLB fragments

[007/30] and Sandbach p.15
FINDA. WAS GÉL ÀND HJR HÉR SÁ THA MÀNNA ÉNER HORS.
Finda was yellow, and her hair was like the mane of a horse.

ÀND WELKE SA WRANG ALS ÉK.

Among the various kinds of corn some is as yellow as gold.
There are also golden[-yellow] apples,
of which some are as sweet as honey
and others as sour as vinegar.

According to the 'Middledutch' Dictionary (Middelnederlandsch Woordenboek) that is about the period c.1250-c.1550, the original meaning was more like our 'blond':
"Yellow, the known colour, but the actual meaning is more that of our blond. 'Gelu haer' is in Middledutch the common word for what we call blond hair; the combination 'gelu blont' was also used."

Dr. Ottema wrote in his introduction to the OLB (1871), translated by Sandbach (1876):
"Irtha bore three daughters — Lyda, Finda, and Frya — the mothers of the three distinct races, black, yellow, and white — Africa, Asia, and Europe."

It is indeed tempting to assume that because Finda is described as "GÉL", Finda's people must be interpreted as what we call the "yellow" (Asian, i.e. Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian etc.) race.

There are however good reasons to reconsider this idea.
It is more likely that - at least in some of the fragments - Egyptians (or similar people from that area) were meant.

The strongest argument is the fragment below, but there is much more to say about this, which I will do later.

but Inka said he had had enough of all those Finda's people.

Another fragment in which 'Finda's tribes' and the Egyptians are mentioned:

Sandbach p.73
They were not wild people, like most of Finda's race;
but, like the Egyptians, they have priests
and also statues in their churches.

More litterally:
That folk was not wild, like many of Finda's tribes,
but equal to the Égipta-landers. They have priests like them,
and now that they have churches, also statues [of idols].

Note: Jensma added a word between brackets in his translation, stressing the idea that the Magyars were of Finda's stock:
... zoals vele [andere] geslachten van Finda, ...
... like many [other] tribes of Finda, ...

Many other fragments about Finda's people point out that they had priests (and overly powerful kings), very much despised by the peoples of Frya.
I will show these in following posts.

In another fragment, it is suggested that the Finns, who arrived in what is now Finland together with the Magyars, were also of Finda's people:

[045/24] from introduction to the alphabet page

Sandbach p.65
In her time Finda also invented a mode of writing,
but that was so high-flown and full of flourishes
that her descendants have soon lost the meaning of it.
Afterwards they learned our writing—
that is, the Finns, the Thyriers, and the Krekalanders

One could believe that the ancient Finns were somewhat 'Asian', but to suppose the Tyrians (now Libanon) and Greeks were as well, makes no sense. They were more probably east-Mediterranean. Not black, not white, but somewhere in between; what Frya's people might have called GÉL ('yellow' or light brown).

Besides the two copyist letters (Hidde and Liko 'Oera Linda'), the most recent part of the OLB is the part about Black Adel a.k.a. Askar.

In this part which is dated ca. 50 BCE, the Finda's people were still considered to be the biggest threat to the peoples of Frya:

[202/27]

Sandbach p.243
Wr-alda, she said, had told her by his thunder
that all the Frya's people must become friends,
and united as brothers and sisters,
otherwise Finda's people would come and sweep them off the face of the earth.

Sandbach p.245
They must all rise up and drive Finda's people out of Frya's inheritance [or: territory].
If you will not do that, you will bring the [get] slave-chains round your necks,
and the foreign chiefs will ill-treat [or: abuse] your children and flog them
till the blood streams into your graves.

We all know what was the biggest threat to northern Europe around the year zero.
It was not Asians but Romans; Mediterranean people.
This is another indication that with 'Finda's people' not Asians (our so-called 'yellow race') was meant.

fully as much to be feared as their sweet wine with deadly poison.

The Ganges (or Ganga) indeed descends from the Himalayas.

Ljudgért (and the other people of Frya's) who had heard about this river goddess tradition may have interpreted it as being about Finda.

The Hindus themselves may never actually  have used that name.

A Geochemist named Sun Weidong gave a lecture at the University of Science and Technology in Hefei, in eastern China. He cited several ancient Chinese classics, quoting historian Sima Qian’s description of the topography of the Xia empire (regarded as China’s founding dynasty), dating from 2070 to 1600 B.C. “Northwards the stream is divided and becomes the nine rivers,”

He asked, “There is only one major river in the world which flows northwards. Which one is it?”
    Someone replied, “The Nile,”

I think I may have an interesting lead on the origins of "Finda's Folk"

There is an ancient Sino-Tibetan language called Tangut that is written in a script which superficially resembles modern Chinese. However the Tangut symbols do not correspond to modern Chinese ones.

Interestingly, there is evidence of a sort of upper-caste within the society that used this language:
"Nishida hypothesised that Vocabulary I represents the language of the 'black-headed people' who he considers were a nomadic people that formed the ruling class of Tangut society; and that Vocabulary II represents the language of the 'red-faced people' who he considers were a sedentary, agricultural people that formed the bulk of Tangut society. In other words, Vocabulary I may represent a linguistic substratum that was only preserved in the odes of the ruling class."
    https://www.babelstone.co.uk/Blog/2011/08/myth-of-tangut-ritual-language.html

Like the elite in Tangut society, the Sumerians were also referred to as "black-headed" people and hypothesized to have been a ruling elite of foreign origin.
    https://armchairprehistory.com/2011/08/10/the-black-haired-sumerian-elite/
    http://www.diva-portal.org/smash/record.jsf?pid=diva2%3A1524496&dswid=2863

Tangut society being ruled over by a foreign "elite" fits the pattern described multiple times within the Oera Linda Book (e.g., Finns, Athenians, etc.).

"Finda was yellow, and her hair was like the mane of a horse."
Is there anything about this description that might implicate a dark-haired people? What kind of hair color/quality would Frisians associated with horse hair?

I forgot to mention that the Tangut script (which contains 6000+ glyphs and fell out of use centuries ago) is consistent with the description in the Oera Linda Book about the written language invented by Finda:
"In her time Finda also invented a mode of writing, but that was so high-flown and full of flourishes that her descendants have soon lost the meaning of it."

But, I do not wish to imply that Tangut is *the* language of Finda, because this kind of characterization applies to a number of logographic scripts, like Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Sumerian Cuneiform, etc.

But, what if these high-complexity writing systems used in various cultures around the world share the characteristic of being logographic (as opposed to phenetic) because they were all developed by a certain group of nomadic "black-headed" people?

The Wikipedia article on cuneiform had this to say about the relationship between Egyptian writing and Sumerian writing:
      *Cuneiforms and hieroglyphs*
Geoffrey Sampson stated that Egyptian hieroglyphs "came into existence a little after Sumerian script, and, probably, [were] invented under the influence of the latter",[38] and that it is "probable that the general idea of expressing words of a language in writing was brought to Egypt from Sumerian Mesopotamia".[39][40] There are many instances of Egypt-Mesopotamia relations at the time of the invention of writing, and standard reconstructions of the development of writing generally place the development of the Sumerian proto-cuneiform script before the development of Egyptian hieroglyphs, with the suggestion the former influenced the latter.[41]

    2. Very interesting indeed. I don't think the horse-hair comparison refers to hair color, but rather the structure or feel of it; compare: "Beautiful Frya! Like rays of the sun at noon shone her hair, fine as spiders’ webs."

    3. Thank you so much for reading my posts.
Thank you also for maintaining this incredible resource.

As you say, if the color was important, perhaps it would have been stated explicitly.
In the case of Lyda, explicit mention of black hair was probably omitted because black-skinned peoples generally have black hair as well. So saying "she was black-skinned and black-haired" would have been redundant.

Similarly, there were probably some characteristics of "Finda's Folk" that seemed too obvious (at the time) to write down. Unfortunately, without a more explicit description, I can only speculate about the hair color of Finda.

Still the apparent connection between a "black-headed" group of nomadic priests and the proliferation of ideographic writing systems got me very intrigued.

Ideographic scripts are so complicated that they necessitate the formation of a priestly caste who can devote sufficient time to learning reading and writing. Frankly, it reminds me of how some researchers use pretentious jargon to baffle laypeople and justify their status as "academic," even when their findings could easily be explained in plain language.

Whether the establishment of these writing systems was a deliberate strategy used to dominate foreign cultures or just a natural product of these people's thinking is impossible to say. OLB seems to imply that over-complex writing and superfluous laws were a product of Finda's vain temperament.

Chinese writing entered Japan along with Buddhism, and the Japanese people went on for centuries writing in Chinese until they gradually adapted the logographic script to their own purposes with a syllabary system. The excessive influence of Buddhist priests is often cited as a reason for why the capitol was moved from Nara to Kyoto. So the Imperial Court initially felt its sovereignty threatened by a foreign religion.

There are some interesting theories about the origin of "Tengu" spirits in Japanese legend, namely that they are based on actual human beings of foreign origin. Their defining characteristics are their long noses and these black "boxes" tied to their foreheads, which some have compared to phylacteries:

I've been boggled by the references to "Finda's folk" as well, finding it quite hard to believe the picture of such rascally Finns. I must say, however, that along with several peoples, the Finns were not above selling people into slavery. In addition, as slaves themselves they were a hot item in the Middle East because of their blond hair. Still, that the Oera Linda could refer to the Romans in this light makes quite a bit of sense, as the Roman would indeed be a major threat, although Rome was at this point in a state of decay, was it not? I'm wondering, also, if the "Finns" being referred to in the OL might be the Veneti, another oblique, squirrely term but also another people to be reckoned with back then. "The Veneti" includes various tribes, Slavic and otherwise, east of the Vistula. The Po Valley of northern Italy has anciently been a rich land with powerful people, and the Lombards had a strict hierarchy that would have repulsed the Frisians. IDK, just a thought.
