Giving the darkness an veil of seeming confusion and obscurity, which would be the best setting for deception and mischief.
Writing this to highlight the idea, that darkness is not “negative” but the unclear quality is what gives the negative connotation.

As transparency is clear and good. Anything that is not clear and transparent is bad. To simplify their(our) possible ideology.
So maybe “obscurity” is an accurate translation. As it highlights the lack of clarity and transparency, in both material and mental quality.
As in their lifestyle where darkness/night is full of possible dangers, adding obscurity to it.
One enters the weird realm of the supernatural. As mists and unclear things often acts as an link to the unknown/supernatural.
And only clarity can fight the obscure.

If one is open and honest about one’s intentions, trust can easily be formed with mutual aid following.
Anyone that would deviate from this, could be considered shady.
