Grandmother Earth

Earth as a nurse or 'feederess' in Atalanta Fugiens, 1617
This part four about the 'religious' views of the Frya people, emerging from the Oera Linda-book, is about the personified Earth, mother of Frya, and thus, grandmother of the White Race.
According to the Fryan creation myth, Earth (JRTHA) was not created by God or Wralda, but wrought by Time. Likewise, the living world was not created by a deity, but born from Earth.
In various texts, Earth is suggested to have a will of her own, and in one text she is even addressed directly, when Folkmother Frana describes her prophecy.
There are other fragments with a more profane use of the word JRTHA than the ones listed below. In these cases the word simply refers to either the whole planet or only its solid parts (perhaps without the oceans and seas), sometimes it just means soil or ore (Dutch/ German: erts/ Erz).

2b. Our Primal History [006/13] TID WROCHTE ALLE THINGA. ÁK JRTHA
Wralda, who alone is whole and eternal, created the potential. Time began and wrought all things; the very Earth herself. Earth bore all grasses, herbs and trees; all cherished and all despised creatures. All that is good and cherished, she brought forth by day, and all that is evil and despised, she brought forth by night. After the twelfth Yulefeast, she bore three girls: Lyda from glowing hot, Finda from hot, and Frya from warm substance.
As they lay naked, Wralda fed them with his breath so that mankind would be bound to him. As they matured, they became fruitful and dreamed of pleasure. They received Wralda's ‘od’ into them, and so they each bore twelve sons and twelve daughters; twins each Yuletide. All of mankind has come from these.

2e. Frya was White [010/22] THÁ HJU SÉID HÉDE. BÉVADE JRTHA
Exquisite Frya! When she had spoken, the earth trembled like Wralda’s sea. Fleeland's surface sank beneath her feet, the sky turned black and rained ceaselessly, and when her children went searching for their mother, she was already at her watch-star.

7b. How Aldland Sank, ca. 2190 BCE [049/12] THRJU JÉR WAS JRTHA ALSA TO LYDANDE
Earth, Sun and Moon in Atalanta Fugiens, 1617
During the whole summer, Sun had hidden behind clouds, as if she did not want to see Earth. Wind rested in his bags,1 causing smoke and steam to stand like pillars over houses and pools. This made the air become dreary and dull, and neither joy nor pleasure were in the hearts of people.
In the midst of this stillness Earth began to tremble as if she was dying. Mountains split open to spew out fire and flames, while others sank into her bowels; and where there had been plains before, mountains rose up.
Aldland — or ‘Atland’ as the steersmen say — sank down and the foaming waves tread over mountain and valley in such a way that everything was submerged. Many people were buried alive, and many who had escaped the fire later perished in the water. Not only in the lands of Finda did mountains spew fire, but also in the Twiskland. As a result, forests burned one after the other, and when Wind came from there, our lands were covered with ashes. Rivers changed their course, and at their mouths new islands were formed of sand and drowned animals.
Earth suffered like this for three years, but when she recovered, one could see her wounds. Many lands were submerged, others had risen out of the sea, and half of the Twiskland had been deforested. Bands of Finda's folk came roaming across the empty spaces, and our dispersed people were exterminated or became their allies. This forced us to be twice as vigilant and time taught us that unity is our strongest burg.

9c. The Gerdmen Move to Punjab [074/25] BÉVADON BÉDE. SÉ ÀND JRTHA
The king of Tyre, who later realized that all of his best steersmen had left, sent all his ships with his wild mercenaries to capture them dead or alive, but when they approached the strait, both Sea and Earth quaked. Then Earth heaved up there, so high that all the water ran out of the strait, and all mudflats and shores rose up in front of them like a burg wall. This happened because of the virtues of the Gerdmen, as any one can see brightly and clearly.

11b. Death of Frana [083/17] HARK JRTHA ÀND WÉS BLÍDE MITH MY
At first Frana ignored him, but finally she opened her lips and spoke: ‘My eyes are blurred, but the inner light of my soul emerges... Yes, I can see... Hear Earth, and rejoice with me! When Aldland drowned, the first spoke of the Yule wheel stood at the top. Then it went down and so did our freedom. When two more spokes or two thousand years have passed, however, the sons who are born out of fornication between princes and priests and the folk will stand up and speak out against their fathers. These sons will all be murdered. But what they shall have said will be remembered and bear fruit in the hearts of resolute people, like good seeds that were laid in your soil.
Another thousand years the spoke shall descend and ever more sink into darkness and blood, shed over you when princes and priests deceive. But then the red of dawn will start glowing again. Seeing that, the false princes and priests will join forces to keep freedom down. But freedom, love and unity will strengthen the folk and rise out of the gutter with the wheel of time. The light that started as a glimmer, will eventually turn into a flame. Blood of the villains will flow over you, O Earth, but you must not absorb it. Toxic creatures will drink it and perish. All vile histories that were made up to propagate the princes and priests will be offered to the flames. Finally, your children shall all live in peace.’ When she had spoken, she collapsed.

13f. Primal Teachings 2 [102/12] JRTHA SELVA NER EN'G SKEPSLE
[...] all creatures change their position and their shape, as well as their minds. Therefore, can neither Earth itself, nor any creature ever say ‘I am’, but rather ‘I was’.

14a. Fryasland Swamped, ca. 305 BCE [115/10] ÉVIN SÁ SKEDDE JRTHA HJRA WALDA ÀND BERGA
The magus was proud of his slyness, but Earth would show him that she could not allow any magus or idols on the holy site where she bore Frya. Just like the wild horse shakes its mane, after throwing its rider in the grass, Earth shook her woods and mountains. Rivers spread over the fields, the seas boiled, mountains spewed up at the clouds and what they had spit was hurled back down to earth.
At the beginning of the harvest month [August], Earth tilted northward and sank, lower and lower.* In the wolves' month [December], the low marks of Fryasland were covered by sea. The woods where the images had been were elevated and ravaged by storm. In the following year, frost came in the hard month [January] and old Fryasland laid hidden under an ice sheet. In the solmonth [February], a storm wind came from the north, pushing mountains of ice and stones. In spring, Earth rose again. Ice melted, ebb came and the woods with images drifted towards the sea.
[* ‘Earth tilted...’ — literal translation; it is not clear what actually happened.]

(Referring to fragment 9c:)
14d. Alexander the King [123/08 + 124/15] ET LAND THÀT JRTHA VPHÉID HÉDE UTA SÉ
He himself [Alexander] went along the coast with his other folk, through the dry desert — that is the land that Earth had raised from the sea, when she closed the strait, after our ancestors had entered the Red Sea.
[...] When Alexander learned how his scheme had worked out, he became so reckless that he wanted to dig out the dry strait, to the mockery of Earth. However, Wralda deserted his soul, and, in his arrogance, he drowned himself in wine before he could even start.*
[* ‘and, in his...’ — lit.: ‘therefore, he drowned in wine and in his overconfidence’.]

15b. Helena's Writings [134/25] JRTHA HETH HJARA BLOD DRONKEN
In early times, the slave peoples knew nothing of freedom. Like oxen they were brought under the yoke. Into earth's bowels they were driven to dig metal, and into the hard rock of the mountains, they were compelled to chisel out plush residences as homes for princes and priests. Of all their work, nothing was for themselves; all was to be for the princes and priests, to make them ever more rich and powerful, to their own detriment. Working in such a way, they turned gray and rigid in their early years and they died without ever experiencing joy in life, despite the fact that earth offers an abundance to all her children.
But our migrants came: our exiles passed through the Twisklands into their territories and our sailors arrived in their harbors. From them, they heard talk of the common freedoms, justice, and laws that no one should do without. All of this was absorbed by the wretched and troubled people like dew by arid fields. When they were saturated, the most daring began to clank their chains until it hurt the princes.
However, the princes were proud and heroic, so there was still some virtue in their hearts. They deliberated and shared some of their surplus wealth. But the cowardly and pseudo-pious priests could not stand that. Among their invented gods, they had also created bitter-cruel idols. A pestilence broke out in the lands and they claimed that the gods were furious about the disobedience of the protesters. Then the most rebellious were strangled with their chains. Earth drank their blood. From that blood she grew fruits and grains and all who ate thereof became wise.

15c. Yesus or Buda of Kashmir [137/13 + 141/13] JRTHA SKIL HIRA JÉVA ALLÉNA SKÀNKA ANTHA WERKANDE MÀNNISK
‘Earth’, he said, ‘grants her gifts to those who scratch her skin; he must dig, plow and sow in it, he who wishes to reap of it. However,’ he said, ‘no one has to do this for another, unless it happens by common will or with love.’
He taught that no one should grub in her bowels for gold, silver or precious stones, to which envy sticks and from which love flees. ‘To adorn your girls and women’, he said, ‘her rivers deliver enough.
[...] There will be no other masters, princes or bosses than those who were elected by common will. Then Frya will rejoice and Earth will only grant her gifts to the working people.

15e. Gosa’s Will [142/06] JRTHA HETH HJA NAVT NE BÀRAD
A bad time has passed by, but another is approaching us. Earth did not bear it and Wralda did not create it; it; it comes from the east, from the core of the priests. It will breed so much suffering that Earth cannot drink all the blood of her slain children. It will spread darkness over the spirit of mankind, like thunderclouds over sunlight. Everywhere and in every way, deception and idolatry will challenge freedom and justice. Justice and freedom will perish, and we with them.

16e. Gosa: Purity of Language [161/25] HETH JRTHA FRYA.S.BURCH VNFORLETH BIHALDEN
We have endured much, but among all burgs that were damaged and destroyed in the bad time, Earth has preserved Fryasburg intact, and I can add that Frya's or God's language was preserved as intact here. Here at Texland, therefore, schools must be established.

16f. Liudgerd: Punjab Report [165/18] ÀJEN HJARA FENYN HETH JRTHA NÉNA KRUDA JÉVEN
The land between the Punjab and the Ganges is just as flat as Fryasland by the sea, with varied landscapes of fields and woods, fertile in all parts, which, however, does not prevent thousands upon thousands sometimes starving to death there. These famines can thus not be attributed to Wralda or Earth, but only to the princes and priests.
[...] Besides many other creeping animals, there are snakes from the size of a worm all the way to the size of a tree. The largest can swallow a whole cow, but the smallest are even more dangerous. They hide between flowers and fruits in order to attack those who come to pick them. Whoever is bitten by them must die, because Earth will not give herbs against their poison, as long as the people make themselves guilty of idolatry.*
[* Changed for clarity; lit.: ‘because against their poison Earth has given no herbs, (as long as / insofar) the people have made themselves guilty of idolatry’.]

18. Rika: Stealing of Titles [189/15] JRTHA WARTH BIHWÍLA ÁK AL.FÉDSTRE HÉTEN
It is true that Earth sometimes is likewise called ‘all-feederess’, because she brings forth all the fruits and grains that humans and animals feed themselves with. She would, however, not bear any fruits or grains if Wralda did not give her powers. [...]
That Earth sometimes is called ‘all-feederess’, and a mom ‘feederess’ is still acceptable, but that a man has himself called ‘father’ or ‘feeder’, because he is a dad, is in conflict with all reason.

The Bearer and his Yule

page from Cronecken der Sassen,
Conrad Bote, 1492
This part three about the pre-Christian 'religion' that emerges from the Oera Linda-book focusses on the Carrier or Bearer (KRODER/-AR) and his Yule (JOL) or Wheel of Time. Related are the concepts Time (TID), the Beginning (T.BIJIN) and what I translate as the Potential (T.ANFANG, Dutch/German: aanvang, Anfang).

'Kroder' must be related to Krodo/Crodo, known from German-Saxon sources and to Chronos from the Greek tradition. These were both associated with time.

'Jol', most well known today as 'Yule' is still the more original name for the traditional Northwestern European midwinter celebration. In the Scandinavian languages the word also still means wheel (spelled hjul).

The 'Bijin' may very well have been the origin of the Beguines, as argued in an earlier post (scroll down to April 19).

The 'Anfang' will have been what was actually contemplated at the German-Marsi 'Tanfana' temples that were destroyed by the Romans, as described by Tacitus, instead of an assumed goddess with that name.

“If, then, your supreme being is so very good, why does he not prevent evil?” the priests asked.

Hellenia answered: “Frya has put us on the path, and the Bearer — that is time — must do the rest. For all calamities, counsel and help can be found. But Wralda wants us to search for them ourselves, in order that we should become strong and wise. If we refuse, he permits our fate to unravel, so that we should experience the results of wise and foolish deeds.”

6. Yule, Script, Numbers [045/09/28] THENE KRODER THÉR ÉVG MITH THÀT JOL MOT OMMEHLÁPE

Depicted above are the signs of the Yule, the primary symbol of Wralda and of the Potential or the Beginning, from which came Time, the Bearer, who must conduct the Yule in its circuit forever.
[...] They later learned our script — specifically the Finns, the Tyrians and the Greeks — but they were not well aware that it was based on the Yule and therefore must always be written sunwise.
