Looking back, there is an obvious connection between those interests and the present development of AI. Yet I have only recently rediscovered the practical usefulness of the current generation of artificial intelligence. For a long time I approached it with considerable suspicion and some reluctance to take the plunge. Its limitations are real, errors can be presented with great confidence, and many applications are far more superficial than the technology initially suggests.
But by beginning to work with it more seriously, I have started to recognise something that fascinated me more than thirty years ago: not merely a machine that executes instructions, but a system capable of helping us detect patterns, relationships and unexpected connections on a scale that a single researcher can hardly survey manually.
For the Oera Linda project, this opens up remarkable possibilities.
One obvious application is textual analysis. Different versions of the Oera Linda text can be compared much more systematically. AI can help identify recurring motifs, linguistic patterns, internal connections, and differences between transcriptions and translations.
A second field is the study of parallels and possible overlaps with other traditions. Historical texts, folk traditions, mythological motifs, archaeological evidence and other sources can be compared much more efficiently with specific Oera Linda passages. AI does not provide proof and must never replace source criticism, but it can be an exceptionally powerful instrument for discovering possible connections that can then be investigated and verified independently.
The possibilities for studying the Fryas language are equally significant. Vocabulary, grammatical patterns, variants and contexts can be analysed more systematically. In time, this may support educational tools for studying and practising Fryas, and perhaps even an experimental translation module from and into the language.
AI also creates new ways of making the material accessible. Parts of the texts can be visually reconstructed, developed as scenes or presented cinematically. Maps and other educational material can be produced more easily. We are also working on reading versions for new audiences, including an adaptation for curious and advanced younger readers.
These possibilities have convinced me that the time has come for a broader renewal of the Oera Linda project as a whole.
During the coming period, all public channels will therefore be reviewed, better interconnected and, where necessary, reorganised. The aim is not simply to put more material online. On the contrary, so much material has now accumulated that the main task has become one of organisation, preservation, connection and accessibility.
The highest priority will be the reorganisation and optimisation of the web archive of the Oera Linda project.
The provisional order of work is:
Oera Linda Wiki
The wiki will be developed into the central knowledge base of the project. Manuscript pages, transcriptions, the Fryas text, translations, historical sources, people, places, word studies and research will become increasingly interconnected. The distinction between primary source, transcription, translation, commentary and interpretation will also be made more explicit. This is important both for human researchers and for responsible use of AI.Fryskednis
Valuable material will be inventoried and, where possible, linked to or incorporated into the central knowledge structure. The long-term aim is no longer to maintain Fryskednis as an active publication platform, but to preserve it as a historical archive.Aldfryas
Relevant content will likewise be preserved and, where appropriate, transferred into the new structure. Aldfryas can then eventually be retired as an active platform and preserved as an archive.Oera Linda Forum
The forum contains many years of discussions, hypotheses, source references and substantive exchanges. This history should also become more accessible and searchable, and where useful be connected to the central knowledge base.Oera Linda YouTube channel
The channel will be further developed as the visual and educational extension of the project, combining existing material with new presentations, analyses, reconstructions and visual experiments.Archive.org and other channels
Older files, scans, publications, videos and other materials will be better organised, described and connected to the central structure, ensuring that the earlier history of the project remains permanently discoverable.
This reorganisation emphatically does not mean that older material will simply disappear. The principle is instead:
preserve what is valuable, archive what is historically important, improve what can be improved, and connect what is currently scattered.
In a sense, this brings an old interest back in a new form. The questions that occupied me in the early 1990s — how networks learn, how patterns emerge, and how individual parts interact to form a larger system — have unexpectedly become practically useful for a project I am working on decades later.
AI therefore does not become a new purpose of the Oera Linda project, and certainly not a replacement for independent research. It is a new instrument serving the same purpose that has always been central: making sources accessible, studying texts critically, investigating connections, making findings verifiable, and preserving the material for everyone who wishes to examine it for themselves.
