ÉTHLA ~ ancestors

"Die Ahnensäule"
1938, Rudolf Gahlbeck
ÉTHLA (and varieties) for "ancestors" has been lost in our languages, but it still lives forth somehow as "edel" (and varieties) for "noble". Why and how would a word for such a familiar concept have disappeared and been replaced?

ancestors, forefathers, forbears - english
Vorfahren, Ahnen - german
voorouders, voorvaderen - dutch
voorouers - afrikaans
foarâlders - frisian
forfedre, aner - norse
forfædre - danish
förfäder, anor - swedish
forfeður - icelandic
frumfaðir - faroese

(noble - english)
edel - german, dutch, norse, afrikaans
ædle - danish
ädel - swedish
eal, edel - frisian

from Hettema's Frisian dictionary 1832
